WLWA engaged independent consultancy Nexus Network to survey men and women in the profession regarding issues affecting women including disincentives to staying in the profession, barriers to advancement, attitudes towards different workplaces and types of practice, aspirations for judicial appointment, and factors influencing movement within different legal roles or out of the law altogether.

The research was conducted as part of WLWA's 20th Anniversary Review of the 1994 Chief Justice's Gender Bias Taskforce Report Project, currently examining gender bias in all areas of law and justice in Western Australia. WLWA is due to deliver its report in the Second half of 2014, 20 years on from the 1994 Report. Chapters 2 and 3 of that report concern careers paths for women in the legal profession and appointment of judiciary in Western Australia.

The Survey revealed that being a lawyer takes a huge personal toll, especially on women.

Click HERE for a copy of the Media Release dated 4 March 2014, which includes a summary of the report findings.

A full copy of the Survey Report is available HERE.

Further details on the 20th Anniversary Review and a copy of each chapter of the 1994 Report is available on our Projects tab.
