On 24 November 2008, Australia formally moved to become a party to the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women

Under the Optional Protocol, women in Australia will be able to make a complaint to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women about alleged violation of Australia’s obligations under CEDAW. This can only occur after domestic legal options have been exhausted. The protocol also permits a UN investigation process.

On Tuesday, 28 October 2008, EOWA launched the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency's 2008 Australian Census of Women in Leadership. The Census measures women in leadership positions in Australia and examines the ASX 200 companies and was produced in conjunction with sponsors ANZ and Macquarie University.

Recently Nadine Hartmann, a lawyer from El Salvador, visited Perth, the City that had given her some peace in the late 1980s and early 1990s when El Salvador was suffering a civil war.
